Mark Power Lecture

Mark Power quoted in our lecture:
'The world of photography has moved into a very dark place'

Mark Power born in 1959 in the United Kingdom, came to UEL to give a lecture to us about what kind of work he is doing and how he got there. He mainly gets involved in commissions and personal projects and has a collection of 25 years worth of work. His first photograph was in 1966 on a school trip in Leicestershire, the story he told was that back then they only had a few to take before the camera was out of use so they were very precious, the school bully came along and demanded all the photos are taken of him.

He worked a lot in black and white, which made his work striking, especially in his project for the children's society. I thought his work was individual, the meaning behind the photos meant more than the quality in some cases, this was nice to see because these days everyone is so obsessed with the aesthetic they forget about the story.

Children's Society Project

The Children's Society Project was his first photography activity. It was a commission to show what it was like for young children to grow up in parts of Britain.

A list of various other projects after this:

His work morals and the way he wanted to produce his art was trying to base his photographs on real life things and up to date political topics. He was really just trying to redress what was going on, almost like an advertisement.

He told us that if it wasn't for someone giving him £200 and going to Berlin to capture the famous Eastern Europe photos then he probably wouldn't be as lucky as he was today with his career.

This taught me personally on how to grab any opportunity and go for as many experiences as possible, the more you do and cover the more luck and chance you have of succeeding. He also made it clear that not going the extra step will make things very unlikely for succession.
