Gavin Pretor-Pinney Lecture

Lecture. (2011). Gavin Pretor-Pinney was a freelance graphic designer and then created a magazine. After this he worked for the Guardian making posters and they benefited immensely from his high standard graphic design skills.

He started and was the founder of 'The Cloud Appreciation Society'. There were two ways of looking at the clouds he said, one was the scientific side and the other was the female way of just looking for shapes and feeling what you see not. Expanding on this is that there is an analitical way and the basic way.

He was very interested in all this nature versus human mind and he wrote a book on "The Watchmens Companion".

The career advice he gave out to us was that 'we should try as best we can to not have a specific career'

This meant that we should not limit ourselves to one thing, as being good at many things opens more doors. Being in the economic world today as we have gone through a recession there are not many jobs so the more flexible you are and the more you are willing to do anything and try anything the further you will get.

"He also commented that you should work on all ideas of life."

Meaning that you should stretch your ideas, do not confine yourself, make sure you do things that broaden your mind, your research and experience. The more you see the more the mind sees and this is what gives you inspiration.

What do you see in this cloud?

Mark Power Lecture

Link to Mark Power's website:

Mark Power quoted in our lecture:
'The world of photography has moved into a very dark place'

Mark Power born in 1959 in the United Kingdom, came to UEL to give a lecture to us about what kind of work he is doing and how he got there. He mainly gets involved in commissions and personal projects and has a collection of 25 years worth of work. His first photograph was in 1966 on a school trip in Leicestershire, the story he told was that back then they only had a few to take before the camera was out of use so they were very precious, the school bully came along and demanded all the photos are taken of him.

He worked a lot in black and white, which made his work striking, especially in his project for the children's society. I thought his work was individual, the meaning behind the photos meant more than the quality in some cases, this was nice to see because these days everyone is so obsessed with the aesthetic they forget about the story.

Children's Society Project

The Children's Society Project was his first photography activity. It was a commission to show what it was like for young children to grow up in parts of Britain.

A list of various other projects after this:

L'Italia E Gli Italiana (Most Recent) http://www.markpower.co.uk/projects/ITALY-150

His work morals and the way he wanted to produce his art was trying to base his photographs on real life things and up to date political topics. He was really just trying to redress what was going on, almost like an advertisement.

He told us that if it wasn't for someone giving him £200 and going to Berlin to capture the famous Eastern Europe photos then he probably wouldn't be as lucky as he was today with his career.

This taught me personally on how to grab any opportunity and go for as many experiences as possible, the more you do and cover the more luck and chance you have of succeeding. He also made it clear that not going the extra step will make things very unlikely for succession.

Tom Klinkowstein Lecture

Tom Kilnkowstein is the President of Media A that is 'an innovation, design and consulting group in New York City with clients throughout the world'.
He does talks, lectures, is a professor at various schools and universities, while his work has been exhibited at the AIGA gallery in New York, Paris, Venice, Italy, the list goes on.

When he talked to us at UEL, he gave examples of work, talked about a few companies and also gave a PowerPoint. He explained how we could improve our skills and work ethic.

The advice that Klinkowstein gave us in the lecture was that we should always be prepared: I learnt from his work and what he said was that if you are organized and you make sure you give yourself plenty of time to research your methods and produce more than enough to present then you will accomplish more. If it means writing cards before a presentation so that when you are there you always have a back up incase you get lost in a speech or need a few more pointers. Keep backups of your work because if you loose the one copy you have you will not be in a good position. For example: I pads, Phone, Laptop and USB sticks.

He said 'Try and meet 10 new people every week'
-To gather knowledge
-Recruit others to be your agents
-Connect your nodes via "salons"

This was a strong point because the more people you meet the more doors will open for you in the present or the future. I will keep a book on record as closely as I can, maybe collecting contacts, emails, addresses and numbers so that when I am in a certain country or working in a type of career then I can contact someone who I have met that could help or vice versa.

"Read quality mass circulation publications like the New York Times, Wall Street Journal or equivalent everyday."
This is good to expand and broaden minds and to see whats going on in politics and business, keeping up to date and never falling behind.

He also mentioned that we should write everyday (blog, facebook etc)
For me at the moment this is really valuable to me as I have just started a blog and I am throughly enjoying writing in it and keeping my progress all in one place, Getting feedback from others really helps my education too.

Here are some others:

-Attend conferences and events outside of your comfort zone to understand the language of different professions
-Be honest
-Share the list with a trusted circle of mentors to take advantage of their collective wisdom in order to edit and implement.
-Make a list of initiatives you can start in the next 30 days, to build towards longer- term efforts that wioll have an effect beyond your lifetime.

Helena Appio Lecture

Helena Appio was born in Nigeria, her fathers family came from Italy.  She went to Middlesex University and got a fashion degree and made a shop on covent garden when her daughter was born. In 1990 she saw that the BBC were looking for a visual director and took the opportunity and went to the interview and got the job!

She has now worked for the BBC for 20 years.....

Helena showed us a clip of this man who was born in Jamaica and came to England July 31, 1957. He loves to sing and build this beautifully colourful house in South East London.

Mr. Pink's urge for self-expression includes recording his own music and songs and making spectacular hats of leaves and flowers which he wears with cheerful aplomb. An observer of life and a deeply spiritual man, he shares his wisdom with us.

Above: Brenton Pink on the steps of his house in Lewisham.

Quote from the website link below:

(2007). Brenton Pink Outside His House. "Inspired by a mixture of dreams, memories of his childhood and his religion, he has decorated his Victorian mansion with his own unique dreams."

Helena Appio  gave huge advice when she came to UEL. These were some of them and what I felt towards them and how I can take them and use them to accomplish more.

She told us to work really hard with whatever you do, even if it is voluntary or work experience, a job or helping a friend as if people see that you are a hard worker then you will make a good impression and may be asked back for paid work or a position you have always wanted.

Go to exhibitions and keep a journal and stick in one thing a day. The book will grow with all your inspiration and when you are stuck on a project and need some help then you have a book or sketches or things that you can bring into your work.

Have a goal: where do you want to be in 5 years time?
Research your goals, document your goals to see what you achieve over time.

Don't be afraid to change things, change a direction as if you put your mind to something you can achieve anything.

Assess your strengths and weaknesses honestly, this will make it easy for you to observe things that you can improve on or what type of career paths you may thrive in.

You have to make your own opportunities most of the time. Don't wait for them to come to you.
Don't compare yourself to others.
Don't let people label you and don't label others.
Keep busy and always do things to explore with your abilities.

She said that she had a girl at the BBC having work experience and when Helena approached her at a front desk she was painting her nails with tipex, Helena asked her what she was doing? The girl said that they didn't have any work for her. Helena told us that if this is the case then go and talk to everyone in the office and help with anything, use initiative and find some simple or hard work to help the people wherever you are working because you want to be remembered as the girl/ boy who worked really hard in that 2 weeks. You may get asked back for a job.

Iphone Application for UEL

For Graphic Design 2 for my second group project we had to design an idea to sell to someone. The project before was for an imaginary cause, we did not have to execute an event afterwards. This task was to produce an idea whether it be for a company or a friend, business or hotel etc...

We all did our own mind maps and we ended up with an idea for UEL, University of East London.

This was to ideally design an Iphone or Blackberry Application that would include things such as:

Timetables for UEL students
Updates on classes, change of classes and where classes will be
All module information about each individuals course they are taking
Helpline, contacts: emails, postal addresses and phone numbers
Exam timetables and exam results
Updates on UEL like: events at the student union.
Instant communication between teachers and students via push notifications
Calender for term dates a personal calender diary
To do lists
Student finance progress report

Above is a photograph of what the application looks like on the homepage of the UEL App. It is young looking as that was our target audience and our prime factor was too make it simple and easy to understand, this is because a lot of students said that UEL website is too complicated and too many things go wrong when clicking into too many different places.

We then thought of a way to really get to the students and make a survey on whether or not they thought it was a good idea. We made a video of the group asking a few questions to students walking past us at UEL.

Questions:

1. Do you think the UEL website needs improving? If so then why?
2. Would you use a UEL Iphone etc Application to receive more information on lectures etc....?
3. Would you pay for this Application? It would be at a small price.
4. What do you think the UEL website lacks?
5. Have you had any problems using the UEL website?
6. Is the UEL website easy to use?

The video was a major success, we video recorded 10 different occasions with UEL students. 9 our of 10 said they would pay to use the application. The 1 student who said he wouldn't use it because he would not pay.

A lot of people said that it would be very useful for updates on timetables and email would be really good as they never seem to go on their UEL email online or they very rarely do. They also said that it would be beneficial to get instant notifications on their phone as it would make them more organised. This is why we thought an Application for UEL would be very successful.

The price for the application would have to be a low cost as after all we are students trying to manage our money as best we can. So it would be in the range of 69p to £1. This would last you the whole time you studied at UEL doing any course.

The Iphone App Icon which was finally placed on a fake Iphone was the UEL logo, we thought this was better than making a new one as it would not have been recognised as much as a new logo. It gave a simple, fresh look and turned out to be a success when placed on the Iphone cardboard cutout.

Other things that would be useful for this Application:

Links to the UEL website so you can click and be reconnected to the online website
Subscriptions to news and events

We chose to design the website as very simple with clear links and use the same logo as the UEL websites current one to make it connected with the Uni and more recognisable.

When we presented our idea to the rest of our lecture group, everyone was very impressed and offered help and knowledge so that we could perform this idea to UEL or even a wide range of Universities.

Organicoco Shop

In Graphic Design 2 we were assigned to get into a group of photographers and graphic designers to create an imaginary invite to an event that would take place at a made up place, time and date.

Our group started to brainstorm what we like doing such as hobbies we all like to take part in, maybe painting, riding, sport, watching tv, going to parties, going on holiday and watching films. As we progressed we all agreed that eating was definitely one of the most important things of our daily routine. It was something we all got excited about and discussed that we like to plan, take part in, cook and eat food! It was something we could not live without and everyone had this in common.

When we knew this was the subject we were going to look into more we liked the concept of a new shop, maybe a new restaurant or a special organic shop.

Then with a group member shouting out, 'I love Yotam Ottolenghi'

Yotam Ottolenghi is a restaurant in Islington, London. It has a sophisticated look, a professional vintage looking smart building exterior and interior. The website is very easy to use, simple and easy to search whatever you need to know about Yotam Ottolenghi. They also have other shops in Notting Hill, Belgravia and Kensington.

(2010). Philosophy. "It is familiar because it is personal. It is made and served by a group of people who love preparing food as well as indulging in it, gorging on it, chatting about it endlessly. It is a way of life, somewhere between a healthy obsession and a bad habit we can’t kick."

Then we were able to link this to the next big idea, because of the way the shop is portrayed and we wanted our shop to produce a similar feel and product.

A chocolate shop was our main concept, we thought about what kind of chocolate shop it would be, this would have to fit into where the shop was going to be in London, which we had decided Islington would be a good place next to the Yotti Ottolenghi Restaurant.
We liked the idea of being green, this is very fresh and upcoming and people like to try something that is not so close to their comfort zones.

Harris, J (novel), Jacobs, R L (screenplay). (2001). We thought of the film Chocolat, a romance film, is about a young mother who moved to a French village with her young daughter. She opens La Chocolaterie Maya, a small chocolate shop. Her chocolate has such an effect that it changes everyone in different ways in the village.

Movieman Trailers . (2011).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Az6q4ThqnrA

At 1 minute 10 seconds, there is a special chocolate box that is so aesthetic, wanting to be opened, this was just the perfect idea for an invite to an event.

Names

Organic Chocolate
Coco
Chocolate
Cocobean
Chocolate Bean
Truffle
Chocolat Delux
Chocolat Chaud

BUT

We all agreed on: Organicoco

This title for the shop was simple yet affective, one long word which is easier to remember for people so the marketing was a bonus for the name.

Colour

As we had made the title Organicoco we thought of doing a organic looking textured box, this was either going to be greens or browns.

Ending up with browns, this created a very unique box that when we passed around the lecture room everyone loved the style and idea we had chosen.

Typeface

Wanghonghx. (2011). We chose Trajan Pro, this is a "old, style serif designed in 1989 by Carol Twombly who worked for adobe systems. The design is based on the letterforms of roman square capitals." Trajan was designed as an all capitals typeface, which is why we thought it was different to most of the others. The capital letters and bold type gives Organicoco an appealing look as it gives more strength against the paper we chose. We chose Trajan pro to represent our shops name because it is classy, structured and balanced giving a modern look to our chocolate shop.

The personal invite had to include:

Address
Name of event
Time and Place
An aesthetically pleasing invitation which therefore would interest people to go.
